Ship Sanitation Certificates SSCs under The International Sanitary Regulations (IHR 2005) are of particular importance for the prevention and control of public health risks on board ships on international voyages.

Common Pests

Cockroaches can spread disease via their bodies and droppings. Control measures may include trapping and the use of insecticide. Rodents (rats and mice) can transmit many diseases to humans such as Bubonic Plague, Hantavirus and Weil’s disease. Mosquitoes act as vectors of pathogens and parasites that cause a number of serious diseases, such as: Dengue Fever, Yellow Fever and Malaria.

Pest Control Aboard Ships

• Usage of pesticides not approved by WHO should not be applied on board
• There are very limited areas/locations on board where pesticides could be applied
• For cockroach control, only “boric acid mix” should be used in mess rooms and galleys.
  Crew members should be trained in preparation of the mix and application
• Cockroach gel can be only applied in dry areas like cupboards, drawers, refrigerators, deep freezer etc.
• For rodent control, placing rodent traps for trapping of live rodents, application of baits on decks
• For bed bug control, residual spraying of pyrethrum/propoxur
• For fly control, installation of fly catchers, application of attractant with killer
• Inspection report must to be submitted to PHO if the instruction for pest management is directed by the PHO
• Course of action to be submitted to PHO as per their directions
• Work completion certificate to be submitted to the Captain of the vessel & PHO
• MSDS of all materials used on board to be filed by the Captain/Chief Officer along with the certificate

Pest Control Certificates

The Port Health Office (PHO) in Hong Kong enforces the Prevention and Control of Disease Ordinance (Cap. 599). PHO operates health clearance service for all incoming vessels and grants free pratique for example Ship Sanitation Control Certificates (SSCs). After having our pest control service, Will Legend will issue a Pest Control Certificate for facilitating the Issuance of Ship Sanitation Certificates (SSCs) from Port Health Office for you.
