Continuing the legacy, protecting our glaciers! Thank you for your enthusiastic support of the Third Pole Hong Kong Glacier Museum and Landmark over the past year! In April this year, two Hong Kong primary schools became the first “SDG&STEAM™ Educational Tour”, marking the formal implementation of the joint action between the Tianshan Glaciological Station, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dagu Glacier Management Bureau and Hong Kong Will Legend. In June, another Hong Kong primary school became the first school to visit the Third Pole 4860 during the spring and summer seasons. It represents the in-depth cooperation between the people of Hong Kong and people in Mainland of China to jointly carry out “Let the Glacier Cool, The Country’s First Joint Action to Protect Glaciers”.
“Let the Glacier Cool” Facilitating “Pairing” From November 22 to 27, teachers and students of Hong Kong S.K.H Yan Laap Memorial Primary School (“Yan Laap Primary School”) and nearly 50 parents will embark on the “Third Pole 4860 Journey” and arrive at Dagu Glacier for learning popular science, understand the cryosphere. In addition, Yan Laap Primary School will become the first school to sign a “Sister School Scheme” relationship with a school in Sichuan under the “Let the Glacier Cool” programme. It marks that in addition to jointly actively promoting glacier protection work, Hong Kong Will Legend and the Dagu Glacier Management Bureau are also committed to practicing in-depth cultural exchanges between the two places. Through the interaction between schools in the two places, they will improve the quality of education, help Hong Kong students understand the beautiful motherland, and enhance the sense of national belonging; visiting include mountainous and rural ethnic minorities to help rural revitalization. Through planning the “Green-blueprint” Green School Talk SDG4™, Hong Kong Will Legend leads teachers and students to understand environmental conservation, embark on a journey of glaciers, land and oceans, and establishes a sisterly relationship with primary and secondary schools in Mainland of China. Hong Kong Will Legend contributes to the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in implementing the “Sister School Scheme”, allowing sister schools in the two places to complement each other’s strengths through diversified exchanges and cooperation, and work together to improve the quality of education in the two places. Hong Kong Will Legend leads the Hong Kong public on a journey of glacier conservation in a popular way, promoting the protection of the Third Pole, Antarctica and the Arctic. “Let the Glacier Cool” Conservation and Education program further strengthens scientific research on glacier protection, and joins hands with teachers and students to embark on Dagu Glacier 4860 and Xinjiang Tianshan No. 1 Glacier to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals SDG4 (Quality Education) and SDG13 (Climate Action). Safeguard the Fragile “Asian Water Tower”
The glaciers in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the huge glaciers in Xinjiang, such as the Qilian Mountains, Altai Mountains, Tianshan Mountains and Kunlun Mountains form clean glacial water sources. Here is the starting point of the Yellow River and the Yangtze River, the mother rivers of the Chinese, and also the birthplace of 13 rivers in Asia, including the Mekong River, the Indus River, and the Ganges River. There is also the only river in China that flows northward into the Arctic Ocean – the Irtysh River, originating from the Altai Mountains. There are 50,000 square kilometers of lakes, 100,000 square kilometers of glaciers, 300,000 square kilometers of perennial snow, and more than 9 trillion cubic meters of water resources, which involve the survival and development of more than 2 billion people, so it is called the “Asian Water Tower”. According to the traditional Tibetan saying, Mount Gangdise is the “father of all mountains” and Lake Manasarovar (Mapang Yongcuo Lake) is “the source of all waters”, all mountains and waters in the world originate from this place. As the Third Pole of the Earth, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is the storage of ice and snow second only to the Antarctic and Arctic. Half of the world’s population depends directly or indirectly on glaciers as a source of water for domestic use, agriculture and power generation. Glaciers are also the backbone of biodiversity and support numerous ecosystems. When glaciers melt rapidly, humans are at increased risk of natural disasters such as water shortages and floods. Glaciers at World Heritage Sites are melting at an accelerating pace, with a third of them set to disappear by 2050, according to new research released by UNESCO. These glaciers have been melting at an accelerated rate since 2000 due to rising temperatures caused by carbon dioxide emissions, according to a new study by UNESCO in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature. As a special and important component of the global ecosystem, glaciers are of great significance to maintaining regional ecological stability and regulating meltwater runoff. However, melting caused by climate change threatens this important resource. However, with global warming, the Dagu Glacier has melted significantly, and its total glacier area has shrunk from 2.65 square kilometers in 1980 to 0.54 square kilometers in 2020.
