“Let the Glacier Cool” SDG-in-China, China In Action “2025 International Year of Glaciers’Preservation”
This year happens to be the “International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation 2025”. Hong Kong Will Legend connects with Northwest institute of Eco-Environment and Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Center for Glacier Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, Sichuan Dagu Glacier Administration Bureau, other scientific research and conservation institutions, to promote the “Dagu Glacier International Academic Summit Forum”, and sign the “Let the Glacier Cool” Initiative, jointly calling on the world to take action to protect glaciers. The first World Day for Glaciers, declared by the UN in its resolution A/RES/77/158 along with the International Year of Glaciers 2025, encourage us all to act to preserve the vital role of glaciers in sustaining the future of mankind. Will Legend unites all sectors to promote the sharing of economic achievements, inclusive societies, and harmonious coexistence between humans and nature through conservation, education and social-philanthropy activities, practices Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Climate Goal.
Dagu Glacier International Academic Summit Forum In response to the United Nations’ “International Year of Glacier Conservation 2025″ Initiative and to promote cooperation and policy dialogue between China and the international community on glacier protection, the Northwest institute of Eco-Environment and Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Center for Glacier Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan and Chinese Academy of Sciences, Sichuan Dagu Glacier Administration Bureau will jointly hold the ” International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation 2025″ Dagu Glacier International High-end Academic Forum from March 15 to 18, 2025. In 2024, Global Glacier Casualty List (GGCL) project highlights 18 renowned glaciers worldwide, chosen due to their impending disappearance and their significant scientific and economic value, to raise awareness on the drastic changes glaciers are undergoing and the urgency of their preservation. Dagu Glacier is the only glacier from China included in the list. The conference was initiated by the International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS) and the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS), and aims to bring together experts and scholars in the field of glaciology and representatives of relevant institutions from home and abroad. With topics such as global glacier changes and climate change response, glacier protection and international cooperation, water resource changes and sustainable development in Central Asia, glacier disaster early warning and risk management, the conference aims to exchange academic achievements, discuss scientific research, technological innovation and international cooperation, and contribute to global glacier protection and sustainable development. During the forum, the “Let the Glacier Cool” Initiative will also be held at Dagu Glacier to promote glacier protection. Together, we protect the glaciers, the freshwater source for 4 billion people! Rising global temperatures are causing glaciers to retreat at an alarming rate, leading to water scarcity, rising sea levels, and increasing the chances of natural disasters like floods or landslides. These chain reactions jeopardize ecosystems, human livelihoods, and economies around the world. To address this pressing challenge, we must act now to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “Greenhouse Cooling Patch SDG7™” for green economy, green financing (climate finance), and clean energy to reduce carbon emissions. Will Legend with the support of the Tianshan Glaciological Station, Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Dagu Glacier Administration Bureau, together with scientific research institutions and experts from different regions to jointly launch the “Let the Glacier Cool” Initiative to promote sustainable development of humans and nature. The initiative also has the full support of Rotary International District 3450 to put the sustainable development goals (SDGs) into action. “Third Pole Hong Kong Glacier Landmark Square” Critically Endangered, Projected to Disappear by 2030 Safeguarding the “1/18”, implementing “Education and Promotion” for the belief of glacier protection! Glaciers are essential to Earth’s ecosystem, not only acting as critical freshwater reservoirs but also indicators of the planet’s health. Glaciers provide water for about half of the world’s population, regulate sea levels, and support biodiversity. Over the past 35 years, Dagu Glacier has retreated by 76% and its area of glacial ice decreased from 2.10 km 2 in 1989 to 0.5 km 2 in 2023. Glaciologists predict that Dagu Glacier will disappear entirely by around 2030. Since the year 2000, global warming has led to the disappearance of thousands of glaciers across the world. The” Global Glacier Casualty List GGCL) exists to remember the glaciers’ names and tell their stories. Through the “Let the Glacier Cool” Conservation and Education Programme, Will Legend connecting the Northwest Institute of Ecological and Environmental Resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Dagu Glacier Administration Bureau jointly launched the “First in the Country Glacier Protection for Joint Action” and established the first “Third Pole Hong Kong Glacier Landmark” and the “Third Pole Hong Kong Glacier Museum” on the Dagu Glacier in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, advocating faster reduction of carbon emissions and greenhouse gas emissions, supporting “2025 International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation”, “World Day for Glaciers 21 March”, leading the people of Hong Kong and China to jointly cool the Earth and slow down the melting rate (ablation) of glaciers. 
“Green-blueprint 1.5°C” Mitigates 1.5°C What 1.5°C means and why it matters. Every fraction of a degree of warming matters. For some countries and vulnerable ecosystems, with every additional increment of global warming, changes in extremes and risks become larger. Under the Paris Agreement, countries agreed to substantially reduce global greenhouse gas emissions to enable the long-term global average surface temperature increase to be kept well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5°C. Glacier, Land and Ocean draw Will Legend’s “Green-blueprint” which connects different sectors to promote Green Economy, Climate Finance and Clean Energy to Respond to Climate Change. A Journey of Glacier Forming “Sister School Scheme”, Combating Climate Change, Building a Livable Earth From November 22 to 27, nearly 50 teachers, students and parents of S.K.H Yan Laap Memorial Primary School participated in the glacier project under the “Green-blueprint”. Through the SDG&STEAM™ Educational Tour, safeguarding the Third Pole, Antarctic and Arctic glaciers and freshwater resources. They embarked on the “Third Pole 4860 Journey-Climate Change Dagu Glacier Educational Tour” and arrived at the “Third Pole Hong Kong Glacier Landmark” to learn about cryosphere and collect glacial water samples. Under the “Let the Glacier Cool” programme, it became the first school to sign a “Sister School Scheme” relationship with a school in Sichuan.
