“Let the Ocean Breathe” Conservation and Education Programme

Safeguarding the ocean and air.
Beginning with Little Algae and Big Whale.

Founded by Will Legend on 8 June 2022, this ocean programme within Green-blueprint connects glaciers, land and ocean with air, water, food and daily life.

How can we bring the ocean closer when most people cannot enter it? Through Little Algae and Big Whale, marine science, the Nanpeng Islands marine nature reserve and Xinjiang’s land-based ocean, we turn conservation ideas into learning and participation projects that businesses, organisations and schools can commission.

Ocean programme Hero

The ocean is never truly far away

It supports our lives, society and economy

The ocean may seem distant, yet it is closely connected with the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, the climate and the economy.

Ocean and Air

Marine phytoplankton and seaweed contribute to global oxygen production and the carbon cycle through photosynthesis.

Ocean and Climate

The ocean absorbs large amounts of heat and carbon dioxide from human activities, while facing pressure from warming and acidification.

Ocean and Our Future

Pollution, overfishing and biodiversity loss affect marine ecosystems and the people whose lives depend on them.

WILL LEGEND & SDG PARTNER

Who is Will Legend?

Will Legend is a sustainability enterprise rooted in Hong Kong and an “SDG Partner”. We connect science, education, business and communities. Businesses, organisations and schools can commission us to turn conservation ideas into talks, school and workplace planting, educational resources and field learning projects. Income from commissions enables our team and professional partners to continue their work in conservation and education.

Three connected routes

Bringing the distant ocean closer to the public

Most people cannot observe the deep ocean as directly as they can visit a forest or glacier. Will Legend therefore connects stories, real marine settings and the “land-based ocean” to make the ocean easier to understand and engage with.

Story

Little Algae and Big Whale

Turning ocean science into an accessible story with memorable characters and emotion.

Field

A Real Marine Setting

Learning about biodiversity, protected-area management and public education at Nanpeng Islands.

Connection

The Land-based Ocean

Using glaciers, water resources and cold-water aquaculture in Xinjiang to rethink the ocean, food and industry.

Bringing science into a story

Little Algae and Big Whale

♪ GREEN-BLUEPRINT · LYRIC EXCERPT

“Little Algae” represents marine phytoplankton. Through photosynthesis, these tiny organisms contribute to oxygen production, the carbon cycle and marine food webs. “Big Whale” helps readers understand the ecological role of large marine animals.

Research describes a “whale pump”: some whales feed at depth and return nearer the surface to breathe and release waste, moving nutrients such as nitrogen towards sunlit waters and contributing to marine nutrient cycling.

The story first builds an emotional connection, then reveals that protecting the ocean is not only about saving one species. It also means caring for water quality, habitats, food webs, biodiversity and the balance between human activity and marine life.

Combine Little Algae and Big Whale, Willy Bee®, educational films, MV, the storybook, talks and interactive learning into a programme suited to different ages and audiences.

A real marine setting

Guangdong Nanpeng Islands

Marine conservation is not an abstract slogan. It is long-term work supported by scientific surveys, habitat protection, daily management, cross-sector collaboration and public education.

On 28 January 2024, William visited the Administration of the National Nature Reserve for Marine Ecology of Guangdong Nanpeng Islands to learn about marine biodiversity, conservation work and public education.

Will Legend and the Administration jointly advocated stronger ocean protection to help restore marine biodiversity.

This real connection enables Will Legend to bring knowledge, field experience and conservation messages from a national marine nature reserve to businesses, organisations, schools and the public.

Commission Route One

South China Sea—350 Blue Ocean Journey

For partners seeking a shorter alternative to the Xinjiang Glacier Journey, this three-to-four-day field programme offers a flexible starting point for ocean learning.

Begin a Journey to Safeguard the Ocean

Connect the Nanpeng marine nature reserve, marine biodiversity, public education and a green corridor in the Tropic of Cancer National Forest Park, helping participants understand how marine and terrestrial ecosystems are linked.

✔ Marine biodiversity and protected-area learning

✔ SDG 14 talks, films, MV and story content

✔ Employee, student or stakeholder participation

✔ Group learning, outcome sharing and communication

Will Legend first understands the partner’s objectives, participants, schedule and budget, then co-designs the learning and action components. Access and reception arrangements remain subject to confirmation. Licensed travel partners handle regulated travel services.

The Land-based Ocean

Rethinking the ocean from Xinjiang

When most people cannot enter the ocean, how can we bring the ocean into their learning and daily lives? The “land-based ocean” is one answer proposed by Will Legend.

Far from the sea, Xinjiang uses cold-water resources, aquaculture technology and industrial development to establish inland aquaculture bases. It is not literally an ocean; it is an educational metaphor that helps participants reconsider marine resources through water, land, food and industry.

On 29 July 2025, William visited Xinjiang Tianyun Organic Agriculture Co., Ltd. to document cold-water aquaculture, digital management, processing and local industrial development.

Aquaculture can supplement the supply of aquatic food, but it does not automatically protect the ocean. Its environmental performance depends on feed, energy, water use, discharge, stocking density and management.

In 2026, Will Legend began extending its initiative to reduce marine fishing and pollution to Turpan, known as the “Land of Fire”, and Korla, close to the desert, through the “Let the Glacier Cool – Xinjiang Glacier Journey”. Meltwater from high-altitude glaciers serves as a natural water source for aquaculture. Empowered by technology and green energy, sustainable fisheries are being built, reducing the burden on the ocean. Even deep within the Taklamakan Desert (desert and Gobi), sandy land can be transformed into aquaculture bases, achieving a win-win situation for both ecological and economic benefits.

Commission Route Two

From the Glacier Journey to the Land-based Ocean

Understanding the connections in real settings

Businesses, organisations and schools can commission Will Legend to integrate the land-based ocean into the “Let the Glacier Cool—Xinjiang Tianshan Glacier No. 1 Journey”, moving from glaciers and water resources to cold-water aquaculture, food, technology, local industry and ocean issues.

The journey does not present one aquaculture site as proof of marine conservation. It enables participants to examine where food comes from, how water supports local industry, and how technology, development and environmental responsibility must work together.

Will Legend can combine glacier science learning, aquaculture field visits, employee or student participation, filming and science communication into one project.

World Oceans Day · 8 June

Let one activity become a starting point

An international day should not end after one day. A partner can begin with one talk or activity, then develop field learning, science communication, educational resources or a long-term branded programme.

Talks and Learning

SDG 14, marine biodiversity, phytoplankton, whales, climate and the water cycle.

Stories and Creativity

Little Algae and Big Whale, educational films, Green-blueprint MV, IP stationery and books.

Participation and Communication

Employee, student and family activities, field videos, project records and outcome communication.

Turn World Oceans Day into a programme that continues

Combine suitable content around the partner’s objectives, audience and venue.

Science Communication Station

Connect scientific knowledge with public participation

Give scientists a platform for communication while allowing a partner’s support to be seen in an appropriate way.

Businesses, organisations and schools can commission Will Legend to produce features on oceans, glaciers, biodiversity or sustainable industries.

Will Legend can clarify objectives, connect scientists and field organisations, develop themes, film and edit, prepare subtitles and bilingual content, publish through suitable channels and organise communication outcomes.

A partner’s logo may appear in agreed video frames, event materials or outcome pages with a clear description of its role. Logo placement does not imply that a scientific or public organisation endorses the partner’s products or services.
