With the great support from Professor Wang Feiteng, “Let the Glacier Cool” was successfully launched in the summer of 2023. In the autumn of the same year, William and his Team went to Dagu Glacier in person to visit the Dagu Glacier Management Bureau and expressed their desire to establish joint operations. In the end, Tianshan Glacier Observation and Research Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dagu Glacier Management Bureau and Will Legend served as the founding organization to jointly promote glacier protection.
In the winter of the same year, Professor Wang Feiteng and two doctoral students attended the launch ceremony of the Hong Kong “Let the Glacier Cool” Academic Tour and served as special guests. At the Dagu Glacier, which is about 2,000 kilometers away, there was also a plan to build the first in the country “Third Pole Hong Kong Glacier Landmark” at the same time. In this way, with the joint promotion of Hong Kong and Mainland of China, the environmental protection concept of protecting glaciers was finally transformed into an implemented conservation plan.
Will Legend takes Sichuan Dagu Glacier and Xinjiang Tianshan No. 1 Glacier as the starting point of the “Glacier Protection for Joint Action”, and successfully planned the first tour of “Let the Glacier Cool – Hong Kong SDG&STEAM™ Educational Tour” in the spring of 2024. 128 parents, teachers and students climbed to the glacier on the Third Pole of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to learn about the cryosphere and jointly tackle climate change. The first joint action in the country that brings together national glacier management authorities, scientific research institutions and Hong Kong green enterprises – “Let the Glacier Cool” and “Cover the Glacier with Quilts” join hands to protect glaciers and glacial water resources. Will Legend established the first “Third Pole Hong Kong Glacier Landmark” and “Third Pole Hong Kong Glacier Museum” that Hong Kong and Mainland of China are proud of, located on the Dagu Glacier on the Tibetan Plateau. What If There is No Water, No Food, No Air (Environmental Conservation)
Human survival is inseparable from pure water, food and air. Glaciers conserve clean freshwater resources, and water nourishes land with rich nutrients. Water then follows rivers and merges into oceans to let the ocean breathe. Oceans exhale oxygen, and absorb the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide to let the glacier cool, glaciers maintain a balance of accumulation and ablation, stabilize the planet’s temperatures, enable sustainable water resources, and foster biodiversity and food crops in urban wildlife corridors. This recurring force of nature ultimately allows the health, peace and prosperity of humans and nature to develop sustainably. To keep global warming to no more than 1.5°C – as called for in the Paris Agreement – emissions need to be reduced by 45% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050.
